Laboratory Engineer

At Univar Solutions our greatest asset are our people. If you are interested in working for a global distribution company and enjoy solving complex challenges, consider joining our team.

The background
Although Univar Solutions is a leading, multi-billion-dollar global product supplier spanning chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food ingredients, cosmetics, and anything else you could think of, serving more than 80,000 customers across 100 countries, our strength is taking the global channels and delivering to local producers, wherever they may be.

In Malmoe, the heart of this operation is located at a secure facility in the restricted area of Oljehamnen. Chemicals and ingredients must be handled delicately – safe and secure operations are vital to our business.

This is where You come in. At our warehouse, trucks, ships, and railroad carts deliver chemicals and ingredients packed and in bulk. Trucks pick them up and distribute them throughout the Nordic region. There are strict protocols for QC and QA, and a brand-new laboratory has just been built to secure that we meet pharma-regulations for validating the ingredients we deliver. Your job is to run this laboratory.

The site and the team
Your closest colleagues will be the crew of 13 people running the operations of the warehouse. Your EHSQ-team includes 7 colleagues located at different offices across the Nordics, with your manager based in Gothenburg.

The challenge
Running a laboratory and doing everything from advanced testing of sensitive chemicals to properly discarding lab waste in a fast-paced environment with ever-changing priorities will be a challenge to the best of us. What we ask of you is to keep customer service at the heart of what you do. That customer may be a colleague on-site, a truckdriver passing through, or a major account auditor. Balancing between what earns money, and what needs to be done a certain way at a certain time for compliance reasons is, and always will be, a challenge.

Your key responsibilities in this role will be:

  • Performing a variety of analyses, which include product quality testing, control of analysis data and sample preparation.
  • Responsible for the laboratory and keeping it compliant with the demands in our quality system.
  • Responsible for performing analyses according to EP (European Pharmacopeia), and our internal methods.
  • Keeping accurate records, be highly organized, and meticulous about your work.
  • Ensuring that the data you generate is accurate, consistent, and reliable according to demands in the analytical procedures.
  • Maintaining chemical stocks, laboratory chemicals, equipment validation, and regular checks to ensure the laboratory is an efficient, organized, and safe environment.
  • Keeping all routines, instructions, and methods up to date according to our quality system.
  • Actively participating in customer and supplier audits of the laboratory.
  • Reporting to our Nordic EHSQ department.
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborations with the colleagues on-site, and wider stakeholder network.

Our expectations on Your background as a successful candidate:

  • Academic degree in Chemistry, or other relevant discipline.
  • A few years of laboratory experience from analytical tasks in chemical manufacturing, pharmaceutical industry, or consumer product environments. Enough for you to feel comfortable in running a lab on your own, with occasional remote support.
  • Preferably you have experience from chromatographic technics and other analyses using various equipment.
  • An eye for detail with great organization skills.
  • We believe that you can prioritize the tasks and manage a high workload.
  • You work independently in your daily job.
  • Energetic, curious, pragmatic, and technical personality with a “can-do” attitude.
  • Professional fluency in English, speaking, writing, and reading, will be essential. Fluency in Swedish will also be a great advantage in the on-site collaboration.

The chance we are offering You

This is Your chance to step into a new lab with new equipment and make it your own. In this job you will also get the opportunity to make continuous improvement.

Culture is always tricky to sum up in a few words, but at a global company where people stay for an average of around 10 years, you can expect a place where people enjoy working with the people around them, and the ever-changing challenges, and the room for growth that we provide.

Although the chemical industry is safeguarded by rules and regulations, we balance this with flat hierarchies and decision-making paths when possible.

Compensation is benchmarked and reviewed annually, so we can confidently say that it is fair.

Again, at Univar Solutions our greatest asset are our people. So, if you are interested in working for a global company and enjoy solving complex challenges, consider joining our team. We are committed to keeping our communities healthy, fed, clean, and safe.
