Stockholms universitet
The Department of Chemistry , with more than 200 employees, is one of the largest departments at Stockholm University. The Research spans all areas of chemistry such as analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic and structural chemistry and organic chemistry. The research projects are many from theory to experiment, from basic research to more applied projects often focusing on sustainable chemistry but also advanced analytical methods of chemicals and materials. The department has a very well-developed research infrastructure with state-of-the-art equipment with qualified support from staff scientists. The department also hosts the Bachelor's degree programme in chemistry and three Master's programmes: analytical chemistry, sustainable chemistry, and organic chemistry. PhD programmes are conducted in five areas: analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry. Medical devices are increasingly being transformed through the integration of advanced functional materials that can actively interact with biological systems. This PhD project focuses on the development of next-generation nano-enabled medical devices by combining advanced nanomaterial synthesis with innovative manufacturing and surface engineering technologies. The research will involve the design and synthesis of functional nanomaterials using flame spray pyrolysis, followed by their integration into medical device platforms through aerosol-based coating and deposition techniques. The project aims to develop multifunctional materials and surfaces with tailored physicochemical and biological properties for applications in wound dressings, microneedle systems, biosensors, and other advanced biomaterial-based devices. Particular emphasis will be placed on establishing structure-property-function relationships and understanding how material composition, morphology, crystallinity, surface chemistry, and nanoscale architecture influence biological responses and device performance. The developed systems may provide functionalities such as antimicrobial activity, localized and controlled therapeutic delivery, tissue regeneration, biomarker detection, and other capabilities relevant to next-generation precision healthcare. By combining materials science, chemical engineering, nanotechnology, biomaterials, and medical technology, the project offers a unique opportunity to develop innovative healthcare solutions with strong potential for clinical translation and industrial impact. The PhD student will:
- Design and synthesize next-generation functional nanomaterials using flame spray pyrolysis, exploring novel compositions, architectures, and functionalities for applications in medical devices and biomaterials.
- Develop aerosol-based coating and deposition technologies to integrate nanomaterials into wound dressings, microneedles, biosensors, and other advanced biomedical platforms.
- Engineer nano-enabled medical devices with functionalities such as antimicrobial activity, biomarker detection, controlled therapeutic delivery, enhanced tissue regeneration, and stimuli-responsive behavior.
- Establish structure-property-function relationships by combining advanced materials characterization with investigations of biological performance, device functionality, and nano-bio interactions.
- Work in an interdisciplinary and international research environment, collaborating with experts in materials science, chemical engineering, biomaterials, nanotechnology, and medical technology while disseminating findings through high-impact publications and presentations at leading international conferences.
- documented knowledge in material science, analytical instrumentation, nanomaterial synthesis, and material characterization
- capacity for analytical and creative thinking
- initiative
- independence
- ability to collaborate
